SWEEP PICKING – ARPEGGIOS – By Brian Auer

Brian Auer talks a bit on his technique on sweep picking arpeggios,

I believe the secret to smooth arpeggios is in the picking. A lot of guitarists have really fast hands with a lot of arpeggio shapes but no definition or tone. The pick and the attack on the strings have a lot to do with that, granted the left hand has a big part as well. Having callused fingers makes a big difference too. Most people angle their hand one way when sweeping up and another way when sweeping down. I hear this causing a slurred sound with no definition as well as causing difficulties with timing.
To correct this I started holding my whammy bar between my pinky and ring finger. This enabeled me to be able to feel what the strings tension and pick response would be if my hand didn’t adjust to the direction. Using the whammy bar as sort of a training wheel or crutch. The smooth and exacting motion of the whammy bar allowed me to focus on other aspects of the sound of my arpeggios. I began to pick very hard and agressive holding my hand strait and pushing through the strings, not over them. once I had the motion down I dropped the whammy bar and practiced the motion without it as I learned to keep the tone but ease up on the attack. The angle of your hand needs to be flat just like when you palm mute a rythm. The gradual angling comes from the fingers holding the pick. In my case the thumb and first finger. But, you don’t want to angle it very much because you will lose tone and dynamics. It’s up to you to find your own sound and limits on tone. Different guitars and different brains all sound different…ha!

! Thank you! It depends on the person and how well they know how to train themselves but, I would say it takes about 4 years if you never played guitar.

If you been playing 6 months it might take only a couple years depending on what you already know.

Check out the south Florida Band

    “Rusted Through”.

The Guitar player was my student. He has been playing for 6 years with good instructor.

    Thanks again!
