Jackson 5 – Never Can Say Goodbye

Sometimes, happenstance plays an importance part in the making of hit records. Producer Hal Davis was in his Los Angeles office at Motown Records when he heard a catchy melody being played on a piano in the next room. Investigating, he found aspiring songwriter Clifton Davis who’d come to the label to shop his song “Never Can Say Goodbye” to its publishing firm, Jobete Music. Expressing interest in recording the song, Clifton was happily taken aback when Hal told him that he’d produced the Jackson 5’s R&B/ pop chart-topper “I’ll Be There.” Producer Davis booked a recording session for that night, assembling such first-call talent as guitarist David T. Walker, Art Wright, drummer Gene Pello, bassist Bob West, and pianist Joe Sample of the Crusaders, some of whom had played on some of the J-5’s biggest hits. The beautiful arrangement by Gene Page perfectly fits the quiet, introspective tone of the lyrics. It was also a very “grown up” ballad for the group and to some extent balanced out their ” bubblegum soul” image. Amazing as it sounds, there was some dissent in the label’s A&R department, with some thinking the record would blow a good thing by alienating the group’s massive teen following. Luckily label founder Berry Gordy intervened and “Never Can Say Goodbye” topped the R&B charts for three weeks in spring 1971. Clifton also wrote another number one R&B hit for the Jackson 5, “Lookin’ Through the Windows,” and starred in the TV sitcoms That’s My Mama and Amen.

In the world of playing the Bass, when Victor Wooten speaks, people listen. The Entertainer caught up with Victor Wooten at this year’s NAMM show in Anaheim. Victor Wooten is a 5 time Grammy winner, he has won the “Bass Player of the Year” award from Bass Player magazine three times in a row (the first person to win the award more than once). In addition to a his award winning solo career and collaborations with various artists, like legends Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller,Wooten has been the bassist for Béla Fleck and the Flecktones since the group’s formation in 1988.

Hip-hop/urban soul supergroup Lucy Pearl was formed in the summer of 1999 as the brainchild of Tony! Toni! Toné multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Raphael Saadiq (formerly known as Raphael Wiggins), who left the band he co-founded with his brother D’Wayne in 1998. Saadiq first contacted DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest, which had disbanded after their 1998 LP The Love Movement, and then ex-En Vogue member Dawn Robinson, who had originally departed that group for a solo career in 1997 but jumped at the chance to work with Saadiq and Muhammad. Relying a great deal on live instrumentation in addition to samples and turntable work (Muhammad even plays bass and guitar), Lucy Pearl issued its self-titled debut album in the spring of 2000.

‘What Is Life’ is a song by George Harrison and is the first track on side two of his 1970 solo album “All Things Must Pass”. It was released as the second single from that album in the United States on February 15, 1971 with another album track, “Apple Scruffs,” as the B-side.
The song was written for Billy Preston in 1969, but Harrison decided not to ask Preston to record the song during his “funky” phase, seeing the song as too much of a “catchy pop tune”

“All Things Must Pass” is a triple album by George Harrison, recorded and released in 1970 after the break-up of The Beatles. The first triple album by a solo artist, the original vinyl release featured two LPs of rock songs, while the third LP, titled “Apple Jam”, was composed of informal jams led by Harrison with musician friends and famous musicians.
And some of George’s words: “It goes without saying that it has always been a pleasure to have my old friend Ringo playing drums, along with Klauss on bass, Billy Preston on piano and a few friends I had in the process of making: Gary Wright and Gary Brooker” and the final note: “Last but certainly not least, the amazing Mr. Phil Spector, who producced so many fantastic records in the sixties. He helped me so much to get this record made. In his company I came to realize the true value of the Hare Krishna Mantra. God bless you Phil”.

Super Mario 64 Credits Guitar Cover

I’ve been getting tons of messages of people saying how they are not looking forward to today, because it’s my last weekly cover video for a while. So I knew I had to do something big. I asked my friend Ben if he’d let me record my final cover of the year on his land. It worked out because I feel like the setting fits the song perfectly. Not only is this song one of my most requested, I feel like it fits perfectly as the final song in the year, too.

Before you say it, no this is not fake. My friends and I lugged all my guitars down to the locations, then used an adapter to plug everything in to Ben’s truck. The hardest part of all was just the carrying all four guitars to different spots. The actual recording went seamlessly, strangely enough. My acoustic guitars were even able to pick up the sounds from the brook with the noise gate on since the water was really fast and loud that day. Wish I had more time to mix since I spent the weekend at Connecticon, and edited this video on the car rides. However for the most part, I feel it’s a fitting close.

Thank you guys so much for sticking around this whole year. It’s been sometimes, but amazing more often. I cannot believe the following that what I’ve been doing has rallied up. Also, my 10k sub special will go up today, so look out for that. I can’t believe I’ve made it this far, and it’s going to be really weird not uploading a video on Tuesday. However, I need a break so I’m going to cool off for a bit. See you guys around and hope you have had as much fun listening to my covers as I have making them!
