Its been amazing checking out all the cats on youtube, my latest favorite is marshall harrison who is really advanced with a new technique to me at least called hybrid picking.
The basic idea is that instead of alternate picking a la al dimeola or sweep picking a la frank gambale, what you do is you still use those techniques but you also take advantage of the fact that you have a couple fingers free in your picking hand if you are holding the pick like most people between your thumb and first finger.
So lets say you want to play an octave. Instead of trying to alternate pick it, you leave your pick where it is, and just pluck the note with your 2nd or 3rd finger, which gives you a kind of super economy of motion.
I am just doing some of the beginnings with the new technique and have made up a couple simple exercises for myself to kind of get the feel of it, it definately isn’t smooth at this point but what the heck, its a lot of fun.
