My quartet Rendezvous had the pleasure of recording a 7 song EP in October of 2009 here in Toronto. My older sister Sarah, a Ryerson University media student, was able to secure us some studio time as well as coordinate and co-produce the session along with myself.
“Go the Distance” is from Disney’s “Hercules” and was written by Alan Menken. It was adapted for barbershop by Aaron Dale and made famous by the quartet “Vocal Spectrum”. Danny transcribed the recording in the winter of 2008 and it has become a crowd favourite at our shows!

Working in the booth along with my sister was our good friend and amazing drummer Tristan Henderson (check him out in my videos of “Nardis” and “In the Beginning”). Tristan engineered the session and did most of the mixing along with myself. The final mixes of all the tunes were completed in early February and I’ve been slowly working away on the videos when i’ve had time.

Blue Bottle (Danny), Neumann TLM 103 (Brodie), Neumann TLM 49 (Calvin), Blue Berry (Andrew)
NOT SHOWN: 2 Apex 435’s placed in opposite room corners for Stereo effect, and a large diaphragm condenser mic placed high up in the center of the room. Note: The room was TERRIBLE for barbershop singing, which was a bit of a drag, but we did it anyways.
Recorded and mixed on Protools 8. Video shot with some random nice camera (it was dark in the room so I lightened it so it looks kinda grainy). Video edited with Final Cut Pro. NO PITCH CORRECTION OF ANY KIND USED! What you’re seeing is what you’re hearing. EQ, Compression, Limiting, Reverbs (long and short) and other such plug-ins used, as well as volume automation.

What’s goin’ on everybody?! Hope you guys are having a wonderful start to the new year!
For our second video of 2010, we chose “Endlessly” by the band, B4-4. It has always been one of our favorite songs to jam to, though it’s a little lesser known than the other ones we’ve covered so far. And that’s why we chose this absolutely BEAUTIFUL hidden gem of a song to share with you guys!! We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we have enjoyed performing it for you guys. =)
As you probably have noticed, there are only 3 of us singing in this video – Chris, Dom, and Del.
Last week, after one of our practices, Micah was involved in a serious car accident which left his car totaled. Thanks to God’s grace, he escaped with only an injured knee and ankle, along with a new lease on life.
We decided it was best to let him sit this one out and recover a little bit. But don’t worry, he’s doing fine and will be back singing with us real soon.
We thank you for all of your concern and for all of the prayers. We are truly blessed to have so much support and will continue to try our best to make you guys happy.

bass notes: the low C and the double low C

So now it´s time to go down below. I don´t count vocal fry or growling, it should be real speaking/singing voice.
I start with the low C (C2) which every bass singer shoule have no problem with. Baritones can also reach it but the volume is not so impressive. Even some tenors can reach it (michael kiske, joe lynn turner, geoff tate) but that is rare.
1. a C2 by swedish folk singer fred åkerström, from the song “glimmande nymf”.
2. a C2 by opera bass kurt moll, from Rosenkavalier.
3. an outstanding C2 from russian bass wiktor wichniakov, from the song “do not cast me off in the time of old age”.
4. famous gospel bass JD sumner hitting an easy (for him) C2 in the elvis song way down.
5. JD begins climing down into the cellar, here´s a A1 from “where the roses never fade”.
6. JD hitting a G1 from the same song.
7. russian bass, ivan rebroff, climbing down to a F1, song is “Im tiefen Keller”, this could be a growled note though.
8. JD hitting a F1 from the song “give the world a smile”.
9. JD humming his way down to an E1, from elvis song “I got a woman” live.
10. the famous C1 (almost, he misses the C1 and starts on a E1 instead, then he slides down to a whispered C1) by JD at the end of elvis song “way on down”.
11. a better C1 by JD off the song “you´ll never walk alone”.
12. tim storms humming/singing a C1 from song “amazin grace” live version with Rescue.
13. Tim touching a A0/Bb0 (bottom note on the piano!) in the beginning of this clip!! also from “amazing grace”.

PS: Frying is all about SLOWERING the sound in the throat while normal chest voice is all about LOWERING the sound as low down in the chest as possible.
